Surajpur Wetland and Natural Forest

Photos taken on 11 December 2025

After a gap of a few months, I once again visited the Surajpur Bird Sanctuary. In December, migratory birds from different parts of the world, especially from the Northern Hemisphere; visit this sanctuary. I joined the walk organized by Uttar Pradesh Earth Walks, accompanied by Mr. Rohit Sharma, Mr. Salil, Ms. Aditi, other organizers, and fellow participants. In total, around 16 people attended this morning bird-watching trail.

At this time of year, the sanctuary is full of birds, and the constant chirping creates a lively atmosphere. We were able to spot many local bird species as well as a few migratory ones. With the expertise of the birdwatchers from Uttar Pradesh Earth Walks, we could easily identify different species. The sanctuary has several small patches of land in the middle of the lake where many birds can be seen.

If you visit between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m., you can witness flocks of birds flying around the lake and hear continuous chirping all around. During the event, we spotted the following birds: Plain Prinia, Green Bee-eater, Black Drongo, Red-wattled Lapwing, Indian Peafowl (Peacock), Bar-headed Goose, Parakeet, Greylag Goose, Grey-headed Swamphen, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Citrine Wagtail, Black-winged Stilt, Wood Sandpiper, Northern Pintail (duck), and Tawny Eagle. The highlight of the event was the Citrine Wagtail. We saw many of them, and I was able to capture some flying shots as well.

Once again, it was a wonderful experience visiting this place. By around 9:00 a.m., we concluded the walk, took a few group photographs, and everyone headed home. The organizers plan each event meticulously, share the Google Maps location in advance, and ensure that two to three experienced birdwatchers accompany the group. Overall, the event was extremely well organized and thoughtfully managed.
